I could've grown my hair out if you had.
( prax tries for — not levity, exactly, but at least something akin to a joke. )

Amos huffs out a noise, almost a chuckle. Only two more staples to go.

You'd pull it off.

I used to have longer hair.

One more.

You can't say that if you've got nothing to prove it. It's like me saying I used to be fat.

This is what he likes, hanging out with Prax. The conversation is inconsequential, flowing easily, even if it barely makes any sense.

[

( prax responds, quick and easy. then — )
Were you really fat at some point in your life?
( and then amos drops the last staple into his hand and prax glances down. )
Ah. Thanks.

Amos grins. For a second, he almost tells Prax he'll have to live, not knowing, but -
Then he thinks about Mei. About the uncertainties in Prax's life.
]

( prax tilts his head, catching the tail end of that grin. smiling back for a moment before amos' answer comes and the smile fades and he glances down at the ground instead. )
I'm sorry, Amos.

Amos raises an eyebrow, then turns around, cleaning up the pliers, just so he can pretend that Prax's eyes aren't on him.
]
About what?

He's fine. He is who he is, now.
